      Lanzarote & Fuerteventura, by e-Bike

Two Volcanic Islands, One Unforgettable Ride

Crossing Lanzarote and Fuerteventura by e-bike is one of the most striking cycling experiences in the Canary Islands. This route of approximately 265 kilometres links the volcanic vineyards of La Geria, the dramatic lava fields of the north, the golden dunes of Corralejo and the endless white beaches of the south, all connected by a short ferry crossing across the Bocayna Strait.

      General Characteristics of the Route

This itinerary is moderately demanding, ideal for cyclists with basic to intermediate experience who want to make the most of e-bike assistance on varied volcanic terrain. Unlike a flat coastal ride, this route alternates gentle stretches along the seafront with climbs through volcanic cones and mountain passes, offering constantly changing scenery – from black lava fields to golden dunes and turquoise coves.

The tour can be comfortably completed in 5 stages over 6 days, with an optional extra stage to extend the adventure to Morro Jable and the Jandía peninsula. Roads are generally in excellent condition, and the app-based GPS navigation makes it easy to follow each stage without getting lost.

A Journey Between Two Contrasting Islands

Beyond the physical challenge, crossing from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura by bike offers a deeply enriching experience: the contrast between two islands shaped by fire and wind. Lanzarote, marked by César Manrique’s vision and the surreal beauty of its volcanic landscapes, gives way to Fuerteventura’s wide open spaces, ancient mountains and some of the finest beaches in the Atlantic.

Crossing the Bocayna Strait by ferry, watching Lanzarote’s coastline fade behind you as Fuerteventura’s dunes rise ahead, is a genuinely memorable moment – the perfect symbol of an adventure that connects two very different worlds in a single trip.

      Bicycle Type and Equipment

For this route across Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, we provide e-bikes suited to mixed terrain, combining paved roads with some sections of gravel and volcanic tracks. Electric assistance is especially useful on the climbs around Haría, Femés and the interior of Fuerteventura. Basic equipment includes a helmet, an anti-theft lock and a puncture repair kit.

      Weather Conditions

The Canary Islands enjoy a mild climate practically all year round, but the trade winds can be strong, especially in the more exposed areas of both islands. We recommend windproof clothing and sun protection, since the volcanic terrain offers little natural shade. Rain is infrequent, but a light waterproof layer is always a good idea.

      Accommodation and Services

Accommodation along this route combines apartments, rural hotels and small guesthouses, all located directly on or very close to the route. It is advisable to book well in advance, especially between November and April, when demand on the islands is highest. Most establishments offer secure storage for your e-bike overnight.

Main Stages and Points of Interest

Arrieta – Órzola – Haría – Villa de Teguise (47.2 km)

The adventure begins in Arrieta, on Lanzarote’s tranquil northeast coast, heading up to Órzola and its views of La Graciosa. The route then climbs inland through Haría, the “Valley of a Thousand Palms,” before descending into Villa de Teguise, the island’s historic former capital, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed plazas.

Villa de Teguise – Tahíche – La Geria – Yaíza (46.4 km)

This stage passes close to the César Manrique Foundation in Tahíche before entering La Geria, Lanzarote’s extraordinary wine region, where vines grow in volcanic ash sheltered by crescent-shaped stone walls. A stop for Malvasía wine tasting is a highlight before reaching the picturesque village of Yaíza.

Yaíza – Playa Blanca – Corralejo – Villaverde (52.9 km)

The longest stage of the tour climbs to the mountain village of Femés for sweeping views over the south of Lanzarote and neighbouring Fuerteventura, before a fast descent to Playa Blanca, where a ferry crosses the Bocayna Strait to Corralejo. From there, the route continues alongside the dunes of the Corralejo Natural Park to the inland village of Villaverde.

Villaverde – Betancuria – Antigua – Valle de Ortega (46.5 km)

Heading into Fuerteventura’s mountainous interior, this stage passes windmills near Tefía before reaching Betancuria, the island’s ancient former capital, founded in the 15th century. The route continues through Antigua and finishes in the peaceful rural enclave of Valle de Ortega.

Valle de Ortega – Pájara – La Pared – Costa Calma (48.6 km)

The final regular stage crosses dramatic mountain passes to Pájara, known for its 17th-century church with an Aztec-influenced façade, before reaching La Pared, where the island narrows to its slimmest point between two oceans. The route ends in Costa Calma, on the edge of endless white-sand beaches.

Optional Stage: Costa Calma – Morro Jable (22.4 km)

For those who want to extend their adventure, this relaxed extra stage follows the coastline of the Jandía Natural Park, home to some of the finest beaches in the Canary Islands, ending in the lively seaside town of Morro Jable – with the option to continue further to the Punta de Jandía Lighthouse.

      …frequently asked questions

      What are the difficulty levels?

We classify the routes into three different levels:

      - easy – between 20 and 40 km per day on flat terrain
      - moderate – between 40 and 70 km per day, with some hills
      - demanding – more than 70 km per day on mountainous terrain

What if I run out of strength halfway through the stage?

Since e-bikes are equipped with electric assistance, it is unlikely that this situation will arise. However, if it does, we will be happy to arrange for a transfer to pick you up wherever you are and take you to your next accommodation, along with your bicycle. The cost of this transfer must be paid directly to the driver who picks you up.

What is the signage like for each stage?

A few days before the start of your trip, you will receive a link to an app with detailed descriptions and maps of each stage, as well as GPS tracks for tracking on your mobile device. This app works offline (without a mobile signal) and the voice system can be activated to signal crossings and changes of direction.

How does the ferry crossing between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura work?

The crossing between Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) and Corralejo (Fuerteventura) is made on a comfortable public ferry across the Bocayna Strait, with your e-bike travelling with you. The ferry ticket is arranged as part of your itinerary, and our route notes include the schedule and boarding details for the day of the crossing

What happens in the event of rain or bad weather?

Unfortunately, we have no way of controlling the weather and cannot be held responsible for rain or bad weather during the route. We recommend bringing windproof and waterproof gear for days with wind or light rain. However, in the event of severe weather that prevents you from completing a particular stage, we offer you the option of being transported by vehicle to the accommodation for the next stage.

After each stage, can I leave my bicycle in a secure location?

Yes, every accommodation where you stay has a garage or adequate space to leave your e-bike protected and secure.

What types of bicycles are available?

Although this tour across Lanzarote and Fuerteventura is offered with e-bikes and electric assistance, we also provide road and mountain bikes on request.

Do I have to carry my luggage myself?

All bicycles are equipped with rear luggage racks with two panniers, each with a capacity of 15 litres, where you can distribute a small amount of luggage. However, for those who need to carry a larger volume of luggage, we offer an optional luggage transfer service between accommodations.

What happens if the bicycle breaks down?

In the event of a mechanical or electrical failure, you will be assisted en route to repair (or replace) the bicycle.

In the event of a puncture, you will be provided with a repair kit so that you can repair the punctured wheel yourself.

In the event of theft, you will be responsible for covering the costs involved.

When is the best time to cycle Lanzarote & Fuerteventura?

Thanks to the mild Canary Islands climate, this route can be enjoyed almost all year round. That said, the most pleasant months in terms of temperature and wind are:

      - Spring: March-May
      - Autumn: October-November

Would it be appropriate to take out insurance?

Although it is not essential, it may be advisable if you want to have security under control in the event of any incident.

Departing Costa Calma, you'll pedal beside the breathtaking beaches of the Jandía Natural Park, where endless stretches of white sand meet crystalline turquoise waters—arguably the finest shoreline in the Canaries. The route leads gently to Morro Jable, a lively fishing village turned charming seaside resort, perfect for a leisurely lunch by the harbor.

For those craving more kilometers, an exciting extension continues along the wild, unspoiled peninsula to the Punta de Jandía Lighthouse, marking the island's southernmost tip - a truly remote and unforgettable finale.
