The Portuguese Way along the coast, by e-Bike

Atlantic Adventure to Santiago de Compostela

The Portuguese Coastal Way is one of the most spectacular pilgrimage routes for cyclists seeking to combine a spiritual pilgrimage with the natural beauty of the Atlantic coastline. This approximately 280-kilometre route from Porto to Santiago de Compostela offers a unique experience that combines breathtaking seascapes, ancient historical heritage and the camaraderie characteristic of the Camino de Santiago.

General Characteristics of the Portuguese Way

The coastal variant of the Portuguese Way is distinguished by its moderately demanding profile, ideal for cyclists with basic to intermediate experience. Unlike the inland Portuguese Way, this route hugs the Atlantic coast for its first 180 kilometres, offering panoramic views of the ocean, golden sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs that contrast with traditional fishing villages and modern coastal towns.

The route can be comfortably completed in 5-7 days, depending on the pace and stops each pilgrim wishes to make. Cycling infrastructure has improved considerably in recent years, with numerous dedicated cycle lanes and well-marked trails that make navigation easier.

      The Spiritual and Cultural Experience

Beyond the sporting and logistical aspects, the Portuguese Way  along the coast offers a deeply enriching experience that combines the personal introspection characteristic of pilgrimage with the discovery of an ancient Atlantic culture. Encounters with other pilgrims of various nationalities, the characteristic hospitality of local communities and the contemplation of landscapes that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries all contribute to creating a transformative experience.

Arriving at the Plaza del Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela after several days of cycling along centuries-old trails is a moment of profound personal and spiritual satisfaction, making this Camino much more than just a cycling route: it is an authentic 21st-century pilgrimage that honours ancient traditions while embracing the modern adventure of cycle tourism.

      Bicycle Type and Equipment

For the Portuguese Coastal Way, we recommend a trekking or mountain bike with mixed tyres that provide good grip on both asphalt and dirt trails. The terrain varies between paved secondary roads, gravel paths and some sections of natural trails. Basic equipment should include repair tools, an air pump, spare inner tubes and a basic first aid kit.

      Weather Conditions

The Atlantic climate can be variable, especially in spring and autumn. Cyclists should be prepared for the possibility of rain and coastal winds by carrying suitable waterproof gear. Summers are generally more stable, but can be intensely hot during the middle of the day.

      Accommodation and Services

Public hostel infrastructure is limited in some coastal areas, so it is advisable to book accommodation in advance, especially during the busiest months (May-September). Many establishments offer specific services for cyclists, including secure bicycle storage and basic repair kits.

Main Stages and Points of Interest

Porto – Póvoa de Varzim (43 km)

The adventure begins in the magnificent city of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cyclists can explore the historic centre before heading north, initially following the Douro River until they reach the coast. This first section includes crossing the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge and offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. Póvoa de Varzim, known for its beaches and seaside atmosphere, provides an ideal first stop with excellent infrastructure for pilgrims.

Póvoa de Varzim – Caminha (73 km)

This stage is one of the most beautiful segments of the route, running almost entirely along the coastline. Cyclists will pedal along coastal paths that alternate between long beaches and small rocky coves. Viana do Castelo, the jewel of this stage, is well worth a long stop to visit its historic centre and the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia, which offers exceptional panoramic views of the mouth of the Lima River.

      Caminha – Baiona (35 km)

The Portuguese-Spanish border is crossed by ferry from Caminha to A Guarda, a unique experience that adds a touch of adventure to the trip. Once in Galician territory, the route continues along the coast of the Rías Baixas, with stops in charming fishing villages such as Oia, famous for its 12th-century Cistercian monastery.

      Baiona – Pontevedra  (62 km)

Baiona, the historic port where the first ship carrying news of the discovery of America arrived, marks the start of the final coastal stretch. The route to Vigo offers some of the most spectacular views along the entire route, with the Vigo estuary stretching majestically and the Cíes Islands visible on the horizon on clear days. From Vigo, the route gradually heads inland, following traditional Camino trails. Redondela serves as a meeting point with the central Portuguese Way, and from here to Pontevedra, cyclists will enjoy more rural landscapes, with eucalyptus forests, small Galician villages and centuries-old stone crosses marking the way.

Pontevedra – Santiago de Compostela (65 km)

The final stage combines the excitement of approaching the finish line with some of Galicia’s most authentic landscapes. Caldas de Reis offers the opportunity to relax in its famous thermal waters, while Padrón, the traditional landing place of St. James the Apostle, adds historical and spiritual significance to the route.

The equipment we provide for your trip along the Portuguese Way consists of a safety helmet (compulsory), an anti-theft bar to lock the wheel, and a repair kit in case of an unwanted puncture. Please note that our assistance service will only help you on the road in the event of mechanical or electrical failure of the bicycle. However, you will have to repair any punctures in the tyres yourself.

      …frequently asked questions

      What are the difficulty levels?

We classify the routes into three different levels:

      • easy – between 20 and 40 km per day on flat terrain
      • moderate – between 40 and 70 km per day, with some hills
      • demanding – more than 70 km per day on mountainous terrain
What if I run out of strength halfway through the stage?

Since e-bikes are equipped with electric assistance, it is unlikely that this situation will arise. However, if it does, we will be happy to arrange for a transfer to pick you up wherever you are and take you to your next accommodation, along with your bicycle. The cost of this transfer must be paid directly to the driver who picks you up.

What is the signage like for each stage?

A few days before the start of your trip, you will receive a link to an app with detailed descriptions and maps of each stage, as well as GPS tracks for tracking on your mobile device. This app works offline (without a mobile signal) and the voice system can be activated to signal crossings and changes of direction.

What happens in the event of rain or bad weather?

Unfortunately, we have no way of controlling the weather and cannot be held responsible for rain or bad weather during the route. We recommend bringing waterproof gear for days with light rain. However, in the event of severe storms that prevent you from completing a particular stage, we offer you the option of being transported by vehicle to the accommodation for the next stage.

After each stage, can I leave my bicycle in a secure location?

Yes, every accommodation where you stay has a garage or adequate space to leave your e-bike protected and secure.

What types of bicycles are available?

Although the tour along the Portuguese Coastal Way is offered with e-bikes and electric assistance, we also provide road and mountain bikes.

Do I have to carry my luggage myself?

All bicycles are equipped with rear luggage racks with two panniers, each with a capacity of 15 litres, where you can distribute a small amount of luggage. However, for those who need to carry a larger volume of luggage, we offer an optional luggage transfer service from hotel to hotel.

What happens if the bicycle breaks down?

In the event of a mechanical or electrical failure, you will be assisted en route to repair (or replace) the bicycle.

In the event of a puncture, you will be provided with a repair kit so that you can repair the punctured wheel yourself.

In the event of theft, you will be responsible for covering the costs involved.

When is the best time to walk the Portuguese Way?

Without a doubt, spring and autumn are the most suitable times:

      • Spring: April-June
      • Autumn: September-October
Would it be appropriate to take out insurance?

Although it is not essential, it may be advisable if you want to have security under control in the event of any incident.
