A Journey Through Time — Secrets of the Baix Empordà

Today we swap the Mediterranean blue for the golden tones of the Catalan interior — and you won’t regret it. The route into the heart of the Baix Empordà is like opening a chest full of medieval treasures untouched for centuries.

Get ready to fall in love. Your journey winds through a constellation of charming villages: Palau-Sator, Fontanilles, Gualta, and Verges — each appearing modest on the map until you arrive and find breathtaking terracotta settlements frozen in time. Further on, Garrigola and Viladamat sit quietly among olive groves and centuries-old farmhouses.

The crown jewel awaits at Sant Martí d’Empúries, where you can walk through 2,500 years of Greek and Roman history. Don’t miss the fortified medieval village of Peratallada or hilltop Pals, with views stretching from the Pyrenees to the sea.

This route is also a feast for the palate — stop at local bars, sip regional wine, enjoy tapas made from local produce, and discover the most authentic Catalonia.

The real magic begins as you enter the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, one of Catalonia’s most important wetlands. This natural paradise is a feast for the senses: serene lagoons, flocks of pink flamingos, elegant herons, and hundreds of bird species turning every pedal stroke into something extraordinary.

Leaving this biodiversity oasis behind, the route turns inland across the ever-changing fields of the Empordà until Figueres appears on the horizon — capital of the Alt Empordà.

The “Carrilet” and the Costa Brava

La Garrotxa – El Gironés – La Costa Brava

The old railway line known as ‘El Carrilet’ has become one of the most iconic and popular cycle routes in Catalonia. This route, which connects the Garrotxa region with the Costa Brava, offers cyclists a journey of approximately 57 kilometres through volcanic landscapes, lush forests and charming villages, following in the footsteps of a mode of transport that shaped life in the region for decades.

El Carrilet, a railway steeped in history.

The history of El Carrilet dates back to the late 19th century, when this narrow-gauge line was built to transport goods and passengers between the inland areas and the coast. The train, which owes its name to the characteristic rattling sound it made as it ran, operated until 1969, when it ceased service. Years later, with vision and an appreciation for heritage, the local authorities decided to convert the route into a greenway, preserving its essence and breathing new life into this historic corridor.

An adventure for all five senses

Some journeys are measured in kilometres, whilst others are etched into the soul. This five-stage route through the heart of the Empordà falls into the latter category, offering an experience where every turn of the pedals connects you with the very essence of Catalonia. By the end, we will be certain that we have not merely crossed the Empordà. The Empordà will have crossed us, leaving within us the indelible mark of its medieval stones, its whispering wetlands and its infinite horizon where history and nature dance eternally.

      Bicycle Type and Equipment

For this route along El Carrilet, Tren Petit and the Costa Brava, we recommend an e-bike with hybrid tyres that provide good grip on both tarmac and dirt tracks. The terrain varies between secondary tarmac roads, gravel tracks and some sections of natural trails. Basic equipment includes a repair kit, a pump and spare inner tubes.

      Weather Conditions

The Mediterranean climate can be changeable, particularly in spring and autumn. Cyclists should be prepared for the possibility of rain and coastal winds, carrying suitable waterproof gear. Summers are generally more stable, but can be intensely hot during the middle of the day.

      Accommodation and Services

Accommodation facilities along some coastal stretches may not be available during the peak summer season. It is therefore recommended to book in advance. Many establishments offer specific services for cyclists, including secure bicycle storage and a basic repair kit.

      E-Bike Riverside 520e

The Riverside 520e embodies the quintessence of style in the world of electric bicycles. Its vibrant blue finish offers a modern and captivating aesthetic, attracting admiring glances at every turn. With its clean lines and carefully thought-out details, this electric bike is much more than a means of transport: it is a style statement.

      15-litre panniers

Double pannier with a capacity of 15 litres to attach to the bike’s luggage rack, ideal for keeping your gear visible and within easy reach. The panniers offer enough space to carry your luggage from accommodation to accommodation without the need for additional luggage transfer. Very practical and easy to handle when you arrive at your next accommodation.

      Helmet, Padlock and Repair Kit

The equipment we provide for your trip along the Costa Brava consists of a safety helmet (compulsory), an anti-theft bar to lock the wheel, and a repair kit in case of an unwanted puncture. Please note that our assistance service will only help you on the road in the event of mechanical or electrical failure of the bicycle. However, you will have to repair any punctures in the tyres yourself.

      …frequently asked questions

      What are the difficulty levels?

We classify the routes into three different levels:

      • easy – between 20 and 40 km per day on flat terrain
      • moderate – between 40 and 70 km per day, with some hills
      • demanding – more than 70 km per day on mountainous terrain
What if I run out of strength halfway through the stage?

Since e-bikes are equipped with electric assistance, it is unlikely that this situation will arise. However, if it does, we will be happy to arrange for a transfer to pick you up wherever you are and take you to your next accommodation, along with your bicycle. The cost of this transfer must be paid directly to the driver who picks you up.

What is the signage like for each stage?

A few days before the start of your trip, you will receive a link to an app with detailed descriptions and maps of each stage, as well as GPS tracks for tracking on your mobile device. This app works offline (without a mobile signal) and the voice system can be activated to signal crossings and changes of direction.

What happens in the event of rain or bad weather?

Unfortunately, we have no way of controlling the weather and cannot be held responsible for rain or bad weather during the route. We recommend bringing waterproof gear for days with light rain. However, in the event of severe storms that prevent you from completing a particular stage, we offer you the option of being transported by vehicle to the accommodation for the next stage.

After each stage, can I leave my bicycle in a secure location?

Yes, every accommodation where you stay has a garage or adequate space to leave your e-bike protected and secure.

What types of bicycles are available?

Although the tour along the El Carrilet railway line and the Costa Brava is available on e-bikes with electric assistance, we also provide road bikes and mountain bikes.

Do I have to carry my luggage myself?

All bicycles are equipped with rear luggage racks with two panniers, each with a capacity of 15 litres, where you can distribute a small amount of luggage. However, for those who need to carry a larger volume of luggage, we offer an optional luggage transfer service from hotel to hotel.

What happens if the bicycle breaks down?

In the event of a mechanical or electrical failure, you will be assisted en route to repair (or replace) the bicycle.

In the event of a puncture, you will be provided with a repair kit so that you can repair the punctured wheel yourself.

In the event of theft, you will be responsible for covering the costs involved.

When is the best time to walk the Portuguese Way?

Without a doubt, spring and autumn are the most suitable times:

      • Spring: April-June
      • Autumn: September-October
Would it be appropriate to take out insurance?

Although it is not essential, it may be advisable if you want to have security under control in the event of any incident.
