The Ancient Paths and the White Island
Es Migjorn – Es Mercadal – Maó
The ancient network of paths that has crossed Menorca for centuries has been reimagined as one of the most evocative cycling routes in the Balearic Islands.
This route, which connects the historic city of Ciutadella with the natural harbour of Maó, offers cyclists a journey of approximately 45 kilometres through prehistoric landscapes, fragrant pine forests and whitewashed villages, following trails that generations of islanders have walked long before the age of the motor car.
Paths Steeped in Island History
Menorca’s interior has always been crossed on foot and on horseback. The island’s ancient network of camins de ferradura — literally “horseshoe paths” — linked farms, mills, churches and market towns long before modern roads arrived.
These routes, worn into the limestone by centuries of daily life, connected communities across Es Pla, the central plateau, and down to the hidden coves of the south coast. In recent decades, with a commitment to sustainable tourism and heritage conservation, the Menorcan authorities have waymarked and restored many of these trails, creating the Camí de Cavalls coastal circuit and a series of interior greenways that allow visitors to rediscover the island at a human pace.

An adventure for all five senses
Some journeys are measured in kilometres, whilst others leave their mark on the spirit. This route through the heart of Menorca falls firmly into the second category, offering an experience where every turn of the pedals reveals another layer of the island’s ancient soul. The trail passes prehistoric talaiots and navetes that have stood for three thousand years, dips through shaded ravines of wild olive and Aleppo pine, and opens suddenly onto views of the turquoise sea that no photograph can fully capture. By the end, you will understand that you have not simply crossed Menorca — Menorca will have crossed you, leaving its imprint of limestone silence, Tramuntana wind and Bronze Age mystery.
Bicycle Type and Equipment
For this route along the ancient paths and interior tracks of Menorca, we recommend an e-bike or a gravel bike with hybrid tyres that provide good grip on both tarmac and natural surfaces. The terrain alternates between compacted gravel, secondary roads through rural estates (llocs) and occasional rocky sections of traditional camins de ferradura. Basic equipment should include a repair kit, a pump, spare inner tubes and sufficient water, as services can be scarce on the central plateau.
Weather Conditions
Menorca’s climate is Mediterranean but notoriously windswept, earning the island its reputation as the windiest place in Spain. The Tramuntana wind from the north can make cycling challenging, particularly on exposed central stretches, and cyclists should plan their direction of travel accordingly. Spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant conditions. Summers are warm and generally dry, but midday heat between June and August can be intense, making an early start advisable.
Accommodation and Services
Accommodation options along the interior of the island are more limited than on the coast. The main towns of Ferreries, Es Mercadal and Alaior offer guesthouses and rural hotels, whilst Ciutadella and Maó provide a full range of facilities at either end of the route. It is strongly recommended to book in advance during the summer season, as the island reaches capacity quickly. Several establishments catering to cyclists offer secure bicycle storage, a basic workshop area and packed lunches prepared for an early departure.

However, you will have to repair any punctures in the tyres yourself.

…frequently asked questions
What are the difficulty levels?
We classify the routes into three different levels:
- easy – between 20 and 40 km per day on flat terrain
- moderate – between 40 and 70 km per day, with some hills
- demanding – more than 70 km per day on mountainous terrain
What if I run out of strength halfway through the stage?
Since e-bikes are equipped with electric assistance, it is unlikely that this situation will arise. However, if it does, we will be happy to arrange for a transfer to pick you up wherever you are and take you to your next accommodation, along with your bicycle. The cost of this transfer must be paid directly to the driver who picks you up.
What is the signage like for each stage?
A few days before the start of your trip, you will receive a link to an app with detailed descriptions and maps of each stage, as well as GPS tracks for tracking on your mobile device. This app works offline (without a mobile signal) and the voice system can be activated to signal crossings and changes of direction.
What happens in the event of rain or bad weather?
Unfortunately, we have no way of controlling the weather and cannot be held responsible for rain or bad weather during the route. We recommend bringing waterproof gear for days with light rain. However, in the event of severe storms that prevent you from completing a particular stage, we offer you the option of being transported by vehicle to the accommodation for the next stage.
After each stage, can I leave my bicycle in a secure location?
Yes, every accommodation where you stay has a garage or adequate space to leave your e-bike protected and secure.
What types of bicycles are available?
Although the tour along the El Carrilet railway line and the Costa Brava is available on e-bikes with electric assistance, we also provide road bikes and mountain bikes.
Do I have to carry my luggage myself?
All bicycles are equipped with rear luggage racks with two panniers, each with a capacity of 15 litres, where you can distribute a small amount of luggage. However, for those who need to carry a larger volume of luggage, we offer an optional luggage transfer service from hotel to hotel.
What happens if the bicycle breaks down?
In the event of a mechanical or electrical failure, you will be assisted en route to repair (or replace) the bicycle.
In the event of a puncture, you will be provided with a repair kit so that you can repair the punctured wheel yourself.
In the event of theft, you will be responsible for covering the costs involved.
When is the best time to walk the Portuguese Way?
Without a doubt, spring and autumn are the most suitable times:
- Spring: April-June
- Autumn: September-October
Would it be appropriate to take out insurance?
Although it is not essential, it may be advisable if you want to have security under control in the event of any incident.
